tree mapping at Rimbun Dahan |
|
From November 2011 to January 2012, 25 year-old agricultural science graduate Chia Hui Tong is working on mapping the position and distribution of tree species at Rimbun Dahan. Suggested and supervised by Norsham Yaakob from Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Hui Tong has so far mapped the location of 1604 individual plants. She is also establishing a carpological collection for Rimbun Dahan, made up of seeds and fruits and other plant parts for specific species. The data from Hui Tong's mapping will be incorporating into the living collection modules of BRAHMS (Botanical Research and Herbarium Management), a software tool which is also used by FRIM to maintain their plant collection. "In general, my work is to map all the plant species which Angela has planted since the early 1990s," says Hui Tong, "Currently, only Angela knows the source of plants, the species list, locations of species and date of planting. Thus, this plant documentation task is seen as the starting point to ensure all essential information pertaining to each plant in Rimbun Dahan will be properly documented as this is one of the most important ex-situ conservation sites of Malaysian native plants." |
