New Residency Project in penang

Rimbun Dahan has provided artists' residencies since 1994, but we have never charged for accommodation. Now we are looking at starting another residency in GeorgeTown, Penang, in conjunction with the state government. The model has to be self sustaining, and as well it has to provide funding for artists from the region, like Burma, Thailand, Indonesia, etc, who cannot afford to attend without support.

GeorgeTown is a beautiful and very affordable city for daily life, famous for its street food, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Every artist we know who has visited wants to work there but until now there has been no residency programme in the city.

Our proposal is to provide studio and separate living accommodation in an old government building just outside the UNESCO zone. Residencies would be for 3 or 6 months, and charges would be Ringgit Malaysia 3,000 a month. A full time arts manager will be on site with support staff; there will be opportunities to develop international collaborations and there will be space for exhibitions and instalations.

Take our survey. For us to assess if our model can work, we would be grateful if you could respond to our brief 4-question survey commenting on the charges and the time frame, the two major concerns for our model. Thank you!
