Currently open for applications.

This residency is intended to encourage links between artistic communities in Australia and Malaysia, and to support individual artists, in recognition of how both countries have provided many opportunities for the Hijjas family.

This is a funded 12-month residency, providing accommodation, studio, financial assistance of RM2,000 per month for living and materials, and an exhibition at the end of the year, all on the Rimbun Dahan compound. Each year, one Australian and one Malaysian artist are selected and share a show at the end. The Australian is also provided with a return economy air fare between Australia and Malaysia. All proceeds from sales at the exhibition go to the artists. The residency program, in consultation with the artist, chooses two pieces from the exhibition for its permanent collection.

Applications for this residency should be submitted by the end of August for consideration for the residencies of the following year. The residency starts after Chinese New Year (usually February or March) culminating in an exhibition before Chinese New Year the following year.

Accommodation consists of either a two-bedroom cottage with an Asian kitchen and bathroom, or a studio apartment with a small kitchen and bathroom attached.

Conditions of Offer

1. The residency is intended to give artists a chance to develop their work for up to 12 months at Rimbun Dahan in Kuang, near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and as well to foster stronger links between Australia and Malaysia by strengthening personal and artistic ties between the two countries.

2. Each year, a Malaysian and an Australian artist are invited to Rimbun Dahan where they will work towards a joint exhibition at the end of their combined residency.

3. Accommodation will be provided for each artist in the form of either a two bedroomed cottage with an Asian kitchen and bathroom, or a studio apartment with a small kitchen and bathroom attached. Utilities such as water and electricity are supplied free of charge; a telephone is provided but not paid for. The artist is at liberty to share his or her accommodation with guests but the sponsor should be informed.

4. Studio space, separate from living quarters, of about 5m x 5m (ceiling height 2.7m) is provided for each artist.

5. An allowance of RM 1000 per month for is provided to purchase art materials.

6. A car will be provided for the artists' use. There may not be exclusive use of a vehicle each, and as the selection of cars tends to be old, allowances have to be made. The cars are intended for transport to the train station only. A van is available when necessary.

7. The artist will be provided with a living allowance of RM 1000 a month, to be paid at the beginning of each month. Basic health care (visits to a local GP) is provided, and accident insurance to a maximum coverage of RM 100 000.

8. For the Australian artist, the fare for a return economy ticket will be reimbursed to the artist on arrival in Malaysia. Should the artist return to Australia for any reason during the Residency then the living allowance will not be extended for that period away, but a period of 6 weeks may be spent on full allowance traveling within Malaysia.

9. The Malaysian artist will normally be required to terminate all other forms of employment during the residency and must live within the compound at Rimbun Dahan. A similar period of 6 weeks leave may be taken during the residency.

10. The number of works produced during the residency is not an issue but there should be sufficient works to mount a joint exhibition in the Rimbun Dahan Gallery. The sponsors take no role in artistic decisions.

11. The sponsors will select, free of charge, two pieces from each artist before the exhibition. The works will be chosen in consultation with the artist. No commission is charged by the sponsor on sales.

12. There is no budget for shipping works after the show, for photography or framing, but the sponsors undertake to produce a simple catalogue for each artist as a record of their work during the programme. Work sold will remain the responsibility of the artist to deliver and collect payment, but the sponsors will help wherever possible.

13. The responsibility for the works remains that of the artist at all times. Dehumidified, but not air conditioned, storage space is available in the gallery.

14. The artist will not remove works from the exhibition until the end of the show.

15. Should the artist be unable to adjust to the programme, the residency may be terminated by mutual agreement, but the sponsor is not obliged to provide an exhibition unless the artist has completed at least 9 months of the residency. In the event of early termination, the sponsor will not be responsible for anything other than for what is offered here.

16. The artists must possess a positive outlook to this opportunity. They are not required to collaborate on work but it is hoped that they will share and benefit from the possibilities presented. It should be stressed that the sponsor is not an institution with resources to resolve problems and the artists are expected to take responsibility for themselves.

17. The Residency is intended to provide artists with a calm and productive environment for creative work. There are many opportunities to become involved in the cultural life of Kuala Lumpur or to concentrate on work. The sponsors live in the same 15 acre compound with the artists and other staff who will help wherever possible. The artists are included in the sponsors' social and cultural activities and all facilities within the compound are available for use, such as the tennis court and swimming pool. The sponsors endeavor to provide a supportive environment but the success of the residency depends largely on the attitude and flexibility of the artist.

There is no special selection process as it largely hinges on personal recommendations and the sponsor finding an artist's work interesting. Usually the choice for the following year is made mid year.
