Contemporary dance choreographers are invited to apply for residencies between 1 and 3 months long at Rimbun Dahan.

During the residency, Rimbun Dahan provides free:

  • Self-contained accommodation with kitchen facilities
  • Access to the dance studio and other arts spaces at Rimbun Dahan
  • Networking contacts with the local dance community
  • Limited production assistance for a final showing, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Applications for the residency for choreographers are rolling throughout the year. Exact terms for each residency are determined on a flexible case-by-case basis.

Purpose of the Residency

The residency for choreographers at Rimbun Dahan aims to:

  • Foster links between arts communities in the Southeast Asian region, and between Australia and Malaysia.
  • Encourage local and international choreographers to work collaboratively with Malaysian dancers, or other Malaysian artists (in sound, video, design, etc).
  • Enable international choreographers to explore specific interests in particular Malaysian dance forms or cultural elements.
  • Encourage the production of new contemporary dance works involving Malaysian dancers.
  • Encourage choreographers to explore the intersection between contemporary dance and contemporary and traditional Southeast Asian architecture, and/or works specific to the 14-acre Southeast Asian indigenous garden at Rimbun Dahan.

Many, but not all, residencies for choreographers, are spent in the production of new work shown as a formal production or an informal work-in-progress at the culmination of the residency.
