Play is about having fun and not taking things too seriously.Or is it about learning new skills and establishing the boundaries between childhood and adulthood?
In 'Play-Play Only', Balletbase presents a collection of contemporary dance works from young choreographers. The dancers and choreographers were encouraged to gain confidence and experiment with new ideas to be presented in a low-pressure and informal atmosphere.
The result is 5 short dance works created by Nurulakmal Abdul Wahid and Koh Yea Chin (both recent dance major graduates from Universiti Malaya), Melissa Quek from Singapore, and Yuka Tanaka and Bilqis Hijjas from Balletbase.
7.30pm on Saturday 28 February, 3pm on Sunday 1 March 2009.
Fonteyn Studio Theatre, Level 5, Wisma FAB, 1-3 Jalan 14/22, 46200 Petaling Jaya. See map below.
A Q&A session with dancers and choreographers will follow the performance. This is a wonderful introduction to contemporary dance for dance students, young people and those just embarking on their journey into dance.

A familiar sentence stirs childhood memories. Life remains joyful with simple old-fashioned games: hopscotch, robbers and cops, a-e-i-o-u, London Bridge is falling down...
3x3
Choreographed by Yuka Tanaka
Performed by Yuka Tanaka, Hii Ing Fung and Chan Sheow Fern
Three dancers, three sections of dance. No narrative, just attention to the details of dance: direction, movement, arrangement and form.
Remembering Roald Dahl (work in progress)
Choreographed by Melissa Quek
Performed by Jenny Neo, Alison Chong and Alice Tan
Excerpts from the work in process "Remembering Roald Dahl", a contemporary dance that fondly looks back through the fog of age to re-discover the whimsy and naivete of childhood. With biting humour, author Roald Dahl told fantastic tales in which anything could happen. Inspired by his books, choreographer Melissa Quek attempts to create a place where it makes sense to dream.
Seek a Passage
Choreographed by Bilqis Hijjas
Performed by Bilqis Hijjas, Janice Yong, Tara Thean, Vivian Chan, Jojo Wong, Shirley Ng and Emily Tan.
Bodies follow the thread of the music, emerging from a tight structure to pursue greater freedom. Will they retain their independence, or will rigidity worm its way in?
Rail
Choreographed by Nurulakmal Abdul Wahid
Performed by Muhaini Ahmad, Lim Cheng Choo and Syafizal-Syazlee Salehud-Din
There are moments in life when a single choice will take you down a different track, but in the end, all tracks converge. The paths we have traveled before we will travel again.
