Exhibition Concept

The 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth in 1809 was celebrated worldwide. His
seminal work Origin of the Species came out 151 years ago, subtitled The Preservation of
Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. His theory of adaptation through natural selection is
central to our modern understanding of evolutionary biology; new research constantly reaffirms
the relevance of his theories.

Evolutionary biology is based on studying species of all kinds, discovered in all habitats,
collected and recorded with precise observations and data, then comparing and extrapolating
differences and similarities. Apart from Darwin's remarkable journey on The Beagle between
1831 and 1836, he reached most of his conclusions from observations and musings in his
English garden and from the masses of samples and correspondence he exchanged with other
naturalists. One of his most informative correspondents was Alfred Russel Wallace.

Wallace is now a footnote to Darwin's success, but the “primary reason” (Darwin) was
encouraged to write down his thoughts was because Wallace had written to him from Ternate
(now part of Indonesia in Maluku) in 1858 enclosing a manuscript for Darwin's "perusal"
showing that he had reached more or less the same conclusions as Darwin. Both men
had been stimulated by what they had seen while travelling, and the interpretation of their
observations did not match with the contemporary wisdom concerning the creation of the world.
The thoughts of these two men on the distribution and evolution of species turned modern
thinking upside-down and Wallace's contribution should not be underestimated even though
he was always self effacing about (it), always passing any praise and honour towards Darwin,
the “wealthy establishment figure". (Tony Whitten, introduction to Periplus edition of The Malay
Archipelago, a reprint of Wallace's record of his collecting in south east Asia between 1854 and
1862).

Wallace made a modest living by collecting species for sale to European museums and
collectors; he travelled extensively through what is now Malaysia and Indonesia under the
most primitive conditions, observing, writing and collecting all the way. His name is recorded in
species and geological features, and although his fame is small compared with that of Darwin,
his contribution will survive because it has been documented so meticulously. (Ironically the
record of his journey into the Malay Peninsula at Malacca and Mount Ophir is a mere sketch as
more detailed letters, note books and papers sent to the Royal Geographical Society were lost).

The survival of species, however, depends on more than mere documentation. The world's
natural history museums are full of relics of species now extinct, but scientists today are still
discovering new species in Wallace's terrain. Three species a week of plants, bugs or insects
are being found by researchers in Borneo as they document the Heart of Borneo, an area
that WWF is working to protect, in collaboration with the governments of Malaysia, Brunei and
Indonesia. Survival, though, depends on species' capacities to adapt to change, to better their
chances over less well equipped rivals for the same space, the same food, and as change
accelerates throughout every habitat the pressure is on every species to adapt its physical traits
to suit new conditions.

We know so little about the interaction of species, interdependencies and the consequences
of change, and yet we engage change without a second thought. Forests, reefs, fish, birds,
bugs and mammals are forced to adapt or die because of our exploitation, and yet we humans
have a resource that other species don't have. Our cultural environment can be changed by
conscious decision: we don't need to eat whales, we don't need to drive cars, we don't need to
build extravagant houses, to survive. We just need to change our cultural preferences and that
is our biggest challenge, we must reshape our requirements to enable some sort of equilibrium
that allows us all to survive together.

Artists are invited to consider survival, and the ramifications of Darwin's "survival of the fittest".
Most environmental changes have been brought on by man in his rush to develop, but by fusing
ideas, much like creating a hybrid, there may be a better chance that more survive. Cross
pollination into cross cultural (poly-nation?) hybridization may be better than withdrawing into
our individual tribes, and where better to look at this problem than in Malaysia, where we have
so many cultures living side by side and yet forced apart by our various cultural backgrounds?
Are we up to the challenge? Can we do it here in a microcosm of the world? How should we
approach it and what do we hope to achieve?

It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent; it is the one that is
most adaptable to change.

-- Charles Darwin
